MS 1. Anglo Saxon Shield Boss ca. 6th-7th Cent. AD.
This early Saxon piece is in remarkable condition and has only minor restoration. These are also referred to as an
“Umbo” in some reference books. This was the central part of a warriors’ round shield and was designed to protect the hand. Note the intact rivets. Classic Germanic Migration Age pattern. Provenance of Southern England. This is the exact same type as shown on page 210, fig. 214a, of “Die Alamannen” by Theiss, 2001.
